On Sunday, thousands of Ugandans and friends of Rotary from across the world gathered at the Independence Grounds in Kololo for the 2025 Rotary Cancer Run. What began as a vision more than a decade ago has grown into one of the largest gatherings of its kind in Rotary International.
This year’s event was nothing short of historic.
Record-Breaking Participation and Fundraising
In her heartfelt address, Cancer Run Chair Rtn Ritah Balaka thanked all sponsors, partners, and participants, reminding everyone that, “Today, it is not just about running, we are racing together to save a life.”
Her words rang true as she announced the results:
60,000 runners took part in Uganda and beyond — the highest number to date.
Together, we raised a record UGX 3,573,499,000.
At least three records were broken in participation and fundraising.
Chair Ritah’s leadership and her team’s tireless work inspired Rotarians and partners to deliver at this scale.
Celebrating a Visionary Journey

Past District Governor Stephen Mwanje, the vision bearer of the Rotary Cancer Program, reminded participants of how far the journey has come: “One brave man started small, scaled up fast, and today we have one of the greatest gatherings in Rotary.”
He recognized that together, Ugandans and Rotary have:
Built a cancer treatment center at Nsambya Hospital worth billions.
Contributed to the Rotary Blood Bank at Mengo Hospital.
Raised more than UGX 8 billion since the program began.
Above all, “We have built trust, accountability, and a brand every Ugandan is proud to stand behind.”
His message was a reminder that each contribution, no matter the size, is building a legacy of hope.
A Call to Finish the Job
Our Chief Runner, Rotary International Director-Elect Emmanuel Katongole, delivered a passionate call to action. He reminded us why we run: “Too many Ugandans are still losing their lives to cancer. The truth is simple, the need is greater than the resources available.”
He emphasized that by 2027, Uganda must complete the cancer treatment center bunkers at Nsambya Hospital, which will house advanced linear accelerator machines for world-class cancer treatment. His rallying cry: “Let us run with purpose, run with love, run with hope, and be pilgrims of hope. We must and we will finish the job.”
Gratitude to All
The Rotary Cancer Run would not be possible without the commitment of sponsors, partners, Rotarians, and the thousands of participants who lace up their shoes each year. Your generosity is transforming cancer care in Uganda.
As we celebrate this year’s success, we also look forward. Next year’s run will coincide with the All Africa Institute in Kampala, where the President of Rotary International will join us. Together, let us aim higher — from 60,000 to 100,000 runners — and continue to prove that when Ugandans unite, no challenge is insurmountable.

Thank you for running. Thank you for giving. Thank you for caring.
